"Violet Hill" is a song written and recorded by Coldplay from their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, and was released as a single on May 9, 2008.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
It was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow, white snow
Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below
When the future's architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You'd better lie low
If you love me, won't you let me know?

[Verse 2]
Was a long and dark December
When the banks became cathedrals
And a fox became God
Priests clutched onto bibles
Hollowed out to fit their rifles
And a cross held aloft
Bury me in armor
When I'm dead and hit the ground
My nerves are poles that unfroze
And if you love me, won't you let me know?

[Verse 3]
I don't want to be a soldier
Who the captain of some sinking ship
Would stow, far below
So if you love me, why'd you let me go?

[Outro]
I took my love down to Violet Hill
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
So if you love me, won't you let me know?
If you love me, won't you let me know?

Info[]

Violet Hill is a road in London, near the famous Abbey Road.

"Was a long and dark December" was one of the first lyrics written by the band, and it was used to hire the bassist, Guy Berryman.

The intro for the song was made by the album's producer Brian Eno and with Jon Hopkins, whose song "Light Through The Veins" would be the intro to Life In Technicolour and as the background music for The Escapist, a hidden track on Death And All His Friends.

Violet Hill was the first single from its album.
