Music of the Spheres

Music of the Spheres is the ninth studio album by British rock band Coldplay. It was released on 15nd of October, 2021, by Parlophone in the United Kingdom and Atlantic Records the United States. A space-themed concept album, Music of the Spheres is set in a fictional distant solar system called The Spheres, which contains nine planets, three natural satellites, a star, and a nebula, each of which corresponds to a certain track on the record. A sustainable world tour for 2022 was announced ahead of the album release.

The album was recorded from late 2019 — mid 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic — and was produced by Swedish record producer-songwriter Max Martin. He is known for his achievement of having 25 Billboard Hot 100 number-one songs, most of which he had either written/co-written or also produced/co-produced. The album was also co-produced by Swedish producer Oscar Holter and long-time band collaborator and producer Bill Rahko. Many returning producers and collaborators joined the band's efforts including: Rik Simpson, Daniel Green, Davide Rossi, and Jon Hopkins, as well as featuring guest appearances from Selena Gomez, We Are King, Jacob Collier, and BTS. Speculations about the album's title and themes existed ever since the release of their eighth studio album Everyday Life released on 22 November 2019. The booklets for the record's physical pressings featured two additional pages, with a 1930s black and white photo of a billboard in a field displaying the words “Music of the Spheres” and “Coldplay coming soon” in the bottom left corner, alongside an early graphic of the album's artwork.

The album received mixed reviews from critics, some of whom criticized the album's overtly pop-oriented style. However, the closing track "Coloratura" received critical acclaim. It was supported by three singles, "Higher Power" in May of 2021, "My Universe" in September of 2021, and "Let Somebody Go" in February of 2022, and two promotional singles: "Coloratura" in July of 2021 and "People of the Pride" in March of 2022. "My Universe", a collaboration with South Korean K-pop boy band BTS, earned the band a number one debut on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Coldplay's second US chart-topper after 2008's "Viva la Vida", from their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
