"Amsterdam" is a song by Coldplay from their second studio album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. It is the eleventh and final track of the album.
Background and composition[]
Like a few songs on A Rush of Blood to the Head, an early arrangement of "Amsterdam" was first performed live during the tours promoting Parachutes in 2001. The song was written in Amsterdam, which is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands, hence its title. According to Chris Martin, the band "never really had that much attention paid to [the song], "stating that it "was probably the song that took us the longest time to write, although it's actually the simplest song."[1]
The song showcases the redemptive power of love, and NOT, as many people believe, written about a suicide attempt on Martin's part.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Come on, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
If I, if I'd only waited
I'd not be stuck here in this hole
[Verse 2]
Come here, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited
I've got to get out of this hole
[Chorus]
But time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It's no cause for concern
[Verse 3]
Come on, oh my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
And I know I'm dead on the surface
But I am screaming underneath
[Chorus]
And time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
No, it's no cause for concern
[Outro]
Stuck on the end of this ball and chain
And I'm on my way back down again
Stood on the edge, tied to the noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won't change a thing
I'm sick of the secrets
Stood on the edge, tied to the noose
And you came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose

Critical reception[]
Billboard praised the song and album track "Clocks", saying that both songs "are the band's finest achievements to date, showcasing more confident vocals from Chris Martin and a refreshingly stripped-down approach to modern rock."[2]
