Upon its release, "A Sky Full of Stars" garnered mostly positive reviews from music critics, and charted inside the top 10 in over 16 countries such as Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom and United States. A music video for the song was directed by Mat Whitecross and was released on 19 June 2014.
The single peaked at number one in a small number of territories: Italy, Israel, Luxembourg, Portugal, Lebanon, and Wallonia. It also topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart.
The song is described as EDM-like as it was produced by Avicii. It has a more upbeat sound compared to the rest of the tracks on the album. The song has peaked at Number One in Belgium (Wallonia), Finland, and Italy. It was written by Chris Martin,Guy Berryman,Jonny Buckland and Will Champion However, Avicii played the piano, not Chris Martin. Later Martin said "It felt like cheating" with his interview on BBC Radio 1 with Zane Lowe.

Within 24 hours of its release on iTunes, it had sold over 100,000 units and eventually peaked at Number One in iTunes in 86 countries. It has been a top three hit in music charts since its release, including Belgium (Wallonia and Flanders), Finland, Italy, and Hungary. It was criticized by many fans as "not being real Coldplay".
